What does 'rank is the bid' mean?

A short, direct definition first, then what it explicitly rules out and how it plays out in practice.

"Rank is the bid" is Outbidly's core mechanic, stated as plainly as possible: a listing's position on the leaderboard is set entirely by the total amount of money it has paid, with no separate ranking signal involved. There's no algorithm scoring relevance, no engagement metric, no manual curation, and no vote — the amount paid is the rank, directly and only. Pay more than the listing currently above you, and you take its place. There is nothing else the leaderboard is measuring.

What this explicitly rules out

  • No algorithm. Nothing on the backend is scoring "quality," "relevance," or "engagement" and folding that into position — the sort is a plain comparison of two totals.
  • No votes. There's no upvote/downvote mechanic, no community ranking layer, and no way for popularity to move a listing independent of money paid.
  • No time decay or seniority bonus. Being an early listing doesn't earn a ranking advantage, and being new doesn't carry a penalty — the board has no memory of "who was first," only of who has paid the most.
  • No hidden tiebreaker beyond the stated one. Ties are broken by which listing reached its current total least recently — a deterministic rule, stated on the Rules page, not a black box.

How it plays out in practice

Because rank is the bid and nothing else, the entire board is calculable by anyone at any time: if you know every listing's current total, you know exactly what it costs to pass any one of them — the gap between your total and theirs, with a $1 minimum. There's no guessing at an algorithm's preferences and no waiting to see if a vote count moves. The number you see is the whole mechanism.

Why it's stated this bluntly

Most places that let money influence position do so quietly — a "featured" tag, a boosted post, a sponsored result — while presenting the overall order as organic. "Rank is the bid" is Outbidly's decision to state the same underlying dynamic (money affects visibility) as plainly and literally as possible instead of dressing it up as something it isn't.
